On being a woman & being me

I'm pretty concientious about my health and well being and like to make sure the MOT is done at least once a year. I also make sure that I'm up to date with all relevant tests and procedures like the smear test. So I took myself off to the doctors this week to submit myself into the care of a medical practitioner in order to make that all is right in my world because I owe myself that much! And seeing it's a topic which has been in the news this week I thought I should give a brief account of why women don't go for smear tests very often.

I tend to forget or block out of my mind how horrible the procedure actually is, but add to that the bill of €70 the fact that I'll probably have to get it done again because it was messed up and the fact the nice people in the pharmaceutical companies (all of them) have taken the version of my prescription which works for me, off the market -(all of the versions), at the same time, it means that I will face another ordeal and another €70 bill in 3 months time. Sometimes having woman's bits really sucks. Saying that I will go back and do it again because having cancer cells would suck a lot more. But seriously the price is extortionate and the sooner they bring the cervical cancer screening programme on line the better.

On the other hand in order to get myself ready for our big adventure I have decided to get myself fit and healthy over the next few months. I know in my heart of hearts that gyms and me don't go together and that if I'm really serious about getting stronger and fitter a group situation is the way I should go, so I joined Curves!

Yep. Me. In an all woman, tesosterone free environment with bad dance music, a cd on repeat telling us when to change machine and, the piece de resistence, an hour and a half workout all squashed into 30 mins of sweating! All I say is that it can't do much harm!

Amen, worse than giving birth...ok, maybe not but at least they give you drugs for giving birth. A glass of wine at the very least would make the experience somewhat closer to bearable.

Trixibelle & Claire: Am I being cruel when I complain that it's disgusting that there isn't a free cervical cancer screening programme? I didn't realise the procedure was quite so painful.

Why should you have to pay twice? If they messed up your test, why should you pay for another one?
Is this an example of 'rip-off' medicine?

Hi Paul
No you're not being cruel at all, yes it's miserable but lots of things that are good for you aren't any fun!
As for paying twice in an ideal world you wouldn't have to and if I had the time to have it done at home I wouldn't have to but one of the other perks of living in Dublin is that no one knows you and they don't care if you have to pay twice or not so there is no leniency given. Another reason to leave maybe...
